Even a short push of the pedal can be enough to block the wheels. The vehicle then no longer responds to steering movements by the driver.
ABS keeps the vehicle steerable, so that obstacles that suddenly appear can be avoided even under full braking.
Wheel-speed sensors continually monitor all the wheels. If a wheel threatens to block, ABS operates instantly to reduce the braking pressure at this wheel so that it does not come to a full stop. ABS carries out this control procedure for each wheel separately. This electronic wheel-slip control thus ensures the shortest possible braking distance, as well as improving steerability and increasing vehicle stability.
